Patios are a Wonderful Way to Add Elegance, Comfort, Value and Functionality for Any Home…
When you are Choosing Which Product that is Best Suited for your Needs there are Factors that are Very Important to Consider. First Color Selection, when Building with Natural Flagstone you have less Colors and Color Combinations to Choose from than an Imitation Product like Pavers or Color and Stamped Concrete. The Man Made Materials have Dozens of Colors Combinations to Choose from Over Real Stone but have in Most Cases More Maintenance.
There are also Durability, Drainage, Maintenance, and Repair Issues to Consider with Man Made Products. Maintenance and Budget is also a Big Factor in what Product is Right for your Project. The Cost to Maintain with Man Made Products can Quickly Overcome the Cost of a more Expensive Natural Product like Stone which Requires no Sealers or Re-Leveling. Even though Colored and Stamped or Regular Concrete is Less in Cost to Install the Product it Will Requires a Sealer Treatment every One to Two Year and as far as Durability ,if the Product Cracks and Misses the Control Joints the Repair is Impossible to fully Match with the Original Job and Always Looks Like a Repair. Pavers or Flagstone set in Concrete Require NO Sealer and have Different Repair and Maintenance Challenges. Pavers Have the Ability to Move when the Ground Moves so they Will Require Resetting from Time to Time. Pavers Should be Set in a Class One Base or Fill After Proper Compaction then topped with Sand Before Install then a Product Like Gator dust to top it of (sealer Is optional). Pavers Will Need to be Sprayed for Weeds Once or Twice a Year. Also there is No Way to Drain Water Completely Off the Surface and Away From Structures and Foundations. Pavers are Meant to Let the Water Drain Through the Material and Move so if you are Using this Product Against the House Structure or Foundation you Need to Take this in Consideration. There is No Sealer Needed for Pavers to Keep Color like Colored and stamped concrete and But Can Be Used to Enhance the Color of the Product. an Advantage of Pavers and Colored and Stamped Concrete There are a Large Variety of Colors and Patterns to Choose From and a Paver Product is Very Durable if Like anything is Installed Properly. Flagstone Set in Concrete and Requires No Sealer unless you Want to Enhance the color of the Natural Stone all that is Needed is to Power wash the Patio a Couple Times a Year and Then it is as Fresh as the Day it was Installed. If there is Movement in the Flagstone Patio all the Concrete Joints Act as Control Joints. If the Movement is Severe Enough the Repair is as Easy as Grinding the Joint and Re-Mortaring the Joint. After a Few Weeks the Repair is Undetectable.
Building Vertically is able to be done with all 3 products such as Fire pits, Barbeques. Planters, Retaining Walls and Fireplaces but Each has its Limitations... With Colored and Stamped there are Very Few Items that can be Built Such as Fire Pits and Sitting Benches and has a Tendency Towards Cracking and Needs to be Sealed Annually. This Product Cannot be used for Large Items like Fire Places or items that Need Accessories Installed in the Product like BBQs. Pavers Can be Used for a Few of these items as well but have a Tendency to Move and Prove to be Impractical. Stone is the Most Durable and Practical Product to Achieve your Goals if the Vertical Work is Extensive. Though there are Fewer Color Selections with Real Stone there is an Imitation Stone that has a Wide Variety of Colors, Patterns and Shapes so you will be able to Duplicate Stone that is not in your Geographic Area. Real Stone Will Require a More Skilled Craftsman and there is Virtually No Maintenance. It is More Durable, it is Able to be Repaired with Ease if there is movement and No sealer Required.. You Will Want to Make Sure you Choose the Best Masons for your Project there are Fewer Skilled Masons for Real Stone than Imitation Stone, Paver and Concrete Finishers so make sure you Take the Time to Look at Their Work in Person and Weigh all your Options.
